Polarizable continuum models

Polarizable continuum models (PCMs) describe the solvent as a continuous, polarizable medium—i.e., without explicit solvent molecules—characterized by its macroscopic dielectric permittivity. The solute induces a polarization in the medium, and the resulting reaction field influences the solute in turn. Specific implementations differ in how they define the solute cavity and compute this mutual interaction.
